storm keys: ultra-urban stormwater retrofit

Designgreen led the conversion of this half-acre traffic island, from concrete and lawn to a stormwater demonstration destination. Our design expanded programmable space while preserving mature trees. Street and site rainfall now flows through a sequence of bioretention and permeable pavers. Below ground, a rainwater harvesting system captures, filters and reuses this water to irrigate the landscape and drive a small fountain. Services included stakeholder engagement, project design, permitting, construction supervision, and interpretive signage. Additionally, Designgreen created DC EcoTour, a mobile app introducing visitors to nearby Green Infrastructure. Project partners include the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District and the District of Columbia Department of Energy and Environment.
